The famous Bachan cookies. Well at least they are famous within our family and friends. Bachan means Grandma in Japanese. My husband Stuart, is half Japanese and his Grandma, better known as Bachan, made the best chocolate chip cookies for them growing up! My husband shared his memory of Bachan and Bachan cookies,
It was rare to see Bachan and Grandpa when we were growing up. We always saw them on Christmas, and maybe a time or two in between. There was one sure thing to expect when we saw them, and that was Bachan cookies. My brother, sister and I would watch as Bachan would mix the ingredients, which was so meticulous and precise. When it came time, we would have the opportunity to help and mix the dough, which was complete when the chocolate chips were perfectly spread out. At that point, two spoons were used to scoop and place the spheres of dough on the cookie sheet. About ten minutes later, there they were; Bachan cookies. Eventually, we knew we had to make a copy of the recipe and begin to make them ourselves. After high school, visits were less, but when we did see each other, Bachan cookies were perfectly packaged, saran wrap lining the Tupperware, stacked evenly throughout, and waiting for us. The best cookies I ever had.
I love this story. Bachan cookies are very special to the entire Yoshida family. So in order to try and preserve this tradition, Stuart watched Bachan make the cookies and took detailed notes in hopes to re-create this amazing cookie.
These notes were so detailed that we thought there was no way we could mess them up now. But we still couldn’t get them just right. Don’t get me wrong, they are still absolutely delicious, but they are not the original Bachan cookie. And that’s ok, that’s what makes them so special.
At the time when Stuart got the original recipe, we were dating and I was not vegan. This was probably 8 or 9 years ago. Since becoming vegan, I have messed around with the recipe using many different ingredient substitutes. I have perfected my recipe and have it down to a science now when I make them. They are not like the original Bachan cookie, but they are my own. I could change the name since they are so different, but calling them Bachan Cookies has a deeper meaning. So I think I’ll hold on to this name.
I make these several times a year, especially as birthday presents, Christmas presents and for many social gatherings. No one ever knows they are vegan, they are too delicious to care. I love that I have been able to make the best chocolate chip cookie (in my opinion) and no animals need to be harmed. Oh and I can safely eat the cookie dough since there are no raw ingredients! That is a major plus!
And in case you didn’t realize, this recipe is still a family secret. Both the original and my own will not be shared, at least not at this time. I am sorry, I am robbing you of a delicious cookie. But I cannot bring myself to reveal this recipe yet. It is too special and too darn good.
For now you’ll just have to enjoy the flavor through the pictures. As I finish this post, I am heading off to the kitchen to bake some of these delicious cookies for Christmas! Christmas day we celebrate the day Jesus Christ was born. What a great way to celebrate Jesus, with my loving family and the best chocolate chip cookies ever.
Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill toward all.”
Merry Christmas and God Bless!
